Comedians are known to be funny (obviously) but they often have their own darker side and their own mental health demons to manage. It must be hard to be relied upon to make people laugh without having a down time, a time to wallow or to take time for yourself. I love to laugh, who doesn’t? especially when things look so gloomy as they do at the moment. Looking for something funny on the telly box, we were delighted to find the Jason Manford Muddle Class tour on IPlayer! What a joy! I properly love Mr M and find his sense of humour and delivery absolutely brilliant. The content of this particular tour really resonated with me (as a northern parent of southern children!) so I loved laughing at his observations - Danny Devito being a particular highlight!.
After nearly an hour of brilliant delivery, I was knocked sideways by his last comments.
‘Just because you are struggling, it doesn’t mean you are failing’.
This quote really struck a chord with me. He made reference to how his life is perceived to be perfect when really it’s not and this quote really helped him. Nobodies lives are. It was honest, frank and a real surprise. What a way to end his show. Having looked into it bit further, Jason Manford has been really open about his struggle with mental health and was able to use his platform to reach out to his audience. Brilliant.
My family did think I was a bit weird crying at the end of a comedy show but I was moved. Maybe it was the extremes of laughing to crying or maybe we all feel a bit like Jason and should talk about it just a bit more, listen a bit more, ask the right questions and look out for the signs that someone isn’t coping and be honest.
Here are a few links if you are worried about yourself or a friend.
