Why I did a First Aid Course

I am a big radio fan, particularly Radio 2. I know that probably ages me but I love it. Particularly Jeremy Vine! The content of his show is always interesting, a bit random and the mix of news, music and controversy keep me entertained and annoyed in equal measure.

About 7 years ago, there was a feature on the show all about First Aid Training and why we should do it, how it can actually help and the confidence it builds. Learning First Aid was always one of those things I knew I should do but never got round to doing.  Just hearing about it on the radio made me think again. I had the time, I should just get on with it so I did! I booked a St John’s Ambulance course in Biggleswade as it was the nearest I could find.

Now, it’s been quite some time since I was in a learning environment so on the day I was a bit apprehensive about it but once I got there it was quite good fun! The leader was great, I learnt a lot and realised I didn’t actually know what to do after all. It turns out watching Grey’s Anatomy doesn’t give you the skills to save a life. It wasn’t like doing an exam, it was more informal but still serious and full of information. A morning well spent!

I left the course feeling much more confident, more engaged and ready to help anyone (whether they needed any help or not!).

I hadn’t realised these things need refreshing until I joined ABC so I really should get booked on to another course very soon.

Saturday marks World First Aid Day to encourage people to learn the basics of First Aid. Whatever your prompt, push or incentive, get involved and get learning. You never know when you might need to help someone.
